Millimeter-wave antenna for system-on-chip (SOC) applications

Yong-Kyu Yoon, Bo Pan, Mark G. Allen, John Papapolymerou, Manos Tentzeris

This research focuses on surface-micromachined air-lifted millimeter-wave antenna implementation. Contrary to conventional planar type printed-circuit antenna structures, the 3-D surface micromachined structures minimize substrate effects, enabling substrate independence, high electrical performance, and broad bandwidth. Implemented millimeter-wave antennas include an air-lifted monopole antenna, a monopole-driven Yagi-Uda (M-Yagi) antenna, an air-lifted patch antenna, and an air-lifted monopole antenna.
